The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) will gather leading figures in sports, government and the media in Kaduna this week for its 2026 Triennial National Delegates Congress.
The four-day congress runs from August 26 to 29, 2026, under the theme: “Harnessing the Power of Sports and the Media for National Development, Youth Empowerment and Global Competitiveness.”
A host of top dignitaries are expected. They include National Sports Commission Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, NSC Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade, and National Institute for Sports DG Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu. Also on the list are Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Senators Abdul Ningi and Shehu Sani, and Federal Character Commission Chairman Hon. Ayo Omidiran.
From the sports sector, Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Gusau, Nigeria Olympic Committee President Engr. Habu Gumel, and Nigeria Volleyball Federation President Engr. Musa Nimrod are expected. State FA chairmen including Chief Chikelue Iloenyosi of Anambra, Alhaji Dr. Sharif Rabiu Inuwa Ahlan of Kano, and Hon. Faisal Abdullahi of Kaduna will also attend. FCT FA Chairman Alhaji Adam Mouktar Mohammed will chair the occasion.
SWAN said former presidents Dr. Honour Sirawoo, Sir Stephen Alabi, Chief Fan Ndubuoke, Sani Zaria, Sa’idu Abubakar, Olu Amadasun, and former AIPS Africa President Dr. Mitchel Obi are among patrons and veterans billed to be present.
The programme begins Thursday, August 27, with the opening ceremony at 11am, followed by sporting and recreational activities at 3pm. Business sessions start Friday, August 28, with the SWAN Full Council meeting at 10am. Elections and inauguration of new national officers hold at 12 noon, while social events begin at 4pm.
Ahead of the main events, NEC members, SWANECO, and state chairmen and secretaries arrive Wednesday, August 26. Screening of candidates for national offices is scheduled for 7pm that day. Delegates will depart Saturday, August 29.
SWAN President Mr. Isaiah Benjamin said the congress will allow sports journalists nationwide to discuss issues affecting the profession and strengthen ties with stakeholders.
The event will also honor select contributors. Among those listed for recognition are Mr. Rajan Zaka, Director of Finance and Administration, Ahidiayannem FC President Dr. Robert Onyeani, and Hon. Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran. The Federal Character Commission Chairperson will be invested as the first Matron of SWAN on Thursday.
Kaduna SWAN and the National Secretariat said all arrangements are in place to receive delegates and guests.
