International Scrabble Stars Converge On Lagos FoThe 5th Emmanuel Egbele Annual Scrabble Tournament (EEAST) is set to take place this weekend at Eko Hotel in Lagos, featuring top scrabble players from Ghana and Uganda.
The tournament, tagged ‘Quinta Essentia’, promises to be an exciting event with over 90 players competing for a prize money of over five million naira.
Ghana’s Charles Tachie-Menson and Segun Mudi have arrived in Lagos to compete in the tournament. Tachie-Menson, a familiar force in the Nigerian scrabble circuit, will be looking to repeat his victory at the Lekki Scrabble Classic last year. Mudi, on the other hand, will be competing in the Challenger Division, where he hopes to make a mark.
Dorothy Marion from Uganda has also arrived in Lagos to compete in the tournament. Marion, who has been studying the style of West African players, will be looking to shock the competition with her skills and luck.
The Elite Division of the tournament will feature a new format, where the top four players will proceed to the ‘Final Four’ stage. The knockout phase will see the 1st player facing off against the 3rd, and the 2nd player facing off against the 4th, in a ‘Best of Three’ games.
The Challenger Division will employ the Lagged Swiss and King-Of-The-Hill (KOTH) format, with the Collins Scrabble Word (CSW 24) dictionary serving as the guiding book.
The EEAST has become a major international scrabble tournament, attracting top players from across Africa. The tournament will take place over two days, with 12 rounds of games on the first day and the knockout stage on the second day.
