The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa, is seeking re-election to consolidate on the gains already achieved during his tenure. Okowa expressed confidence that his performance will help him secure a second term in office.
Under Okowa’s leadership, the AFN has:
– Implemented the ‘GET OUR ATHLETES IN SCHOOL’ program, providing scholarships and admission to American colleges and universities for athletes.
– Appointed a Performance Director, Victor Okorie, to monitor and prepare athletes for major competitions.
– Established excellent working relationships with state governments to accelerate the growth of athletics across the country.
Nigerian athletics have regained its faded glory under Okowa’s leadership, with notable performances at:
– World Youth Championship in Kenya
– Senior Athletics Championship in Mauritius and Cameroon
– African Youth Championship in Zambia
– African Games in Ghana
– World Relay Championship in Bahamas
– Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Okowa is confident that his achievements and the progress made will secure his re-election. He emphasized that competition is healthy and that delegates will decide based on the candidates’ contributions to athletics.
The election into the Presidency of the AFN will hold on May 31st in Asaba, Delta State. Okowa is optimistic about winning and continuing his programs to get athletics in Nigeria back to the top.
