Honourable Abiodun Tobun, representing Constituency 1 of Epe Division in Lagos State, has urged Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tax reform. According to Tobun, the government needs to explore innovative ways to raise revenue to address the country’s developmental challenges.

Tobun acknowledged that the tax reform might cause initial discomfort but emphasized that it is essential for the nation’s growth. He cited the UK’s tax reforms as a success story, noting that Nigeria can learn from this example. The lawmaker also stressed that Nigerians, particularly the wealthy and corporate organizations, must pay their taxes to support the country’s socio-economic development.

The proposed tax reform bills, which have sparked controversy in some quarters, aim to ensure uniformity in tax revenue administration, eliminate double taxation, and encourage private sector investment in critical industries. However, some lawmakers from Northern Nigeria have kicked against the bills, citing concerns over the sharing of Value-Added Tax revenue.

Tobun posited that the long-term benefits of the tax reform far outweigh the initial pain. He emphasized that when taxes are paid, the poor masses will benefit from improved living conditions, quality of life, and access to better healthcare, education, and social welfare.

The lawmaker appealed to Nigerians to be patient and support the President Tinubu-led administration’s efforts to make Nigeria better for all.
