Nigeria’s women handball teams, the U-18 and U-20, have emerged victorious in their matches at the ongoing IHF Women’s Trophy Zonal Phase championship in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
U-18 Team’s Thrilling Win
The U-18 team secured a hard-fought 36-33 win over Burkina Faso, overcoming a three-goal halftime deficit. The Burkinabé side dominated the first half with fast breaks and well-coordinated wing play, forcing Nigeria to commit turnovers and taking a 20-17 lead into the break.
However, the second half saw a different Nigeria team, with vital goals and dominant transitional play helping them outscore Burkina Faso 19-13 and seal the win. This victory showcases the team’s resilience and tactical maturity.
U-20 Team’s Dominant Performance
In contrast, the U-20 team was dominant in their match against Togo, winning 52-8 in a goal-fest. The team executed fast breaks with precision and applied high-pressure defense, leaving Togo with little room to breathe.
The wings operated with ruthless efficiency, while the backcourt players dictated the tempo and dished out assists with flair. By halftime, Nigeria had already opened up a commanding 24-6 lead, and they maintained their intensity in the second half.

The U-18 team will face Ghana in their last match of Group A on Tuesday at 1 pm, while they are scheduled to play Benin Republic on Tuesday at 5 pm. The wins have boosted the teams’ confidence and set the stage for further success in the championship.
